The New7Wonders of Nature campaign was initiated by the New7Wonders Foundation headed by Bernard Weber, aimed at offering a global celebration of the beauty and variety that define the planet we live on.
The New7Wonders Foundation
The New7Wonders Foundation was founded in 2001 by Bernard Weber, as a sort of continuation to the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World that were declared by Philon of Byzantium during the Hellenistic period.
The Foundation is based in Zurich, Switzerland, and is financed solely by various partnerships with commercial companies and contributions.
The Foundation's goal is to create a global memory through activities shared by people from all around the world, in the belief that:
"If we want to save anything, we first need to truly appreciate it."
(Bernard Webber, founder of the "New7Wonders Foundation")
The first action taken by the Foundation was the selection of the 7 Man-Made Wonders of the World. On July 7, 2007, in Lisbon, the winners were declared, after a campaign in which 100,000 million people from around the world took part, thus creating the largest democratic process known to the human race.

The 7 Wonders of the Natural World CampaignAs a direct follow-up to the selection of 7 Man-Made Wonders of the World, the start of a campaign to select the 7 Wonders of the Natural World was announced in Lisbon. As previously, all the citizens of the world have been invited to take part in a global democratic process and to celebrate together the beauty of nature, by selecting the New7Wonders of Nature.
The campaign consists of three stages:
Stage 1 – beginning December 2007 and ending July 2009. In this stage, all of the citizens of the world were invited to propose worthy contestants from around the world, from which 77 candidates were selected.
Stage 2 – a panel of experts appointed by the New7Wonders Foundation recommended 28 official candidates. The 28 final candidates were announced on July 7, 2009.
Stage 3 – The final stage is a global vote that is taking place right now. The New7Wonders of Nature will be announced on November 11 2011.
Why is it so important that everyone vote?
The selection of the New7Wonders of Nature is a unique democratic act. The uniqueness of this act derives from the global participation of the citizens of the world through the various media, in order to make a shared human declaration. Through the campaign and the vote, the human race will create a global memory that will accompany it throughout the years.
