From the Chilean mine to the Dead Sea

From the Chilean mine to the Dead Sea

It was only a few months ago that the entire world followed, with bated breath, the fates of the 33 miners trapped by a rockfall in a copper and gold mine in northern Chile. The miners spent 69 harrowing days 700 meters underground, and around world we all watched anxiously and with great interest the live coverage of the successful rescue operation.

A delegation of 25 of the miners who were rescued in Chile five months ago, their families, the governor of the Atacama region where the mine is located, and Chilean journalists, arrived in Israel at the end of February.

The Chilean miners were invited by the Israel Ministry of Tourism for a special visit, to celebrate their rescue after 69 days in the bowels of the earth. The miners who visited the Dead Sea and Masada said that “reality does indeed exceed imagination” and that the Dead Sea and Masada are different and much more beautiful than they had anticipated.

After completing their visit to Masada, and following a leisurely float in the Dead Sea and some mud fun, the members of the delegation made sure to vote for the Dead Sea in the New7Wonders of Nature competition.

The delegation members promised to become ambassadors in their country on behalf of Israeli tourism, and to promote voting for the Dead Sea in the New7Wonders of Nature competition.

For more information about the miners’ rescue, see Wikipedia.
