The fifth annual Tour de Dead Sea cycle race will pedal along the coast of the Dead Sea on March 5th, 2011. Over one thousand riders, amateurs and professionals from Israel, Jordan and overseas, will cycle this year in support of the Dead Sea's candidacy in the finals of the New 7Wonders of Nature global campaign.
The event takes place at the lowest point on earth, where great historical significance meets breathtaking desert settings. Where the hilly Judean Desert slopes into the bottom of the Great Rift Valley.
For the first time, the cyclists will ride through the historic Beit Ha'Arava, King Abdullah Bridge and Qasr el Yahud on the Jordan River where, according to Christian belief, Jesus was baptized.
The riders will enjoy four different routes along the Dead Sea:
- 65 kilometers on-road or 45 kilometers off-road, from the Dragot cliffs to Kalia beach, intended for professional riders
- 25 kilometers on-road from Kalia beach to Qasr el Yahud, intended for Amateurs and families
- 5 kilometers section on the family route, intended for younger cyclists.
Race participants, their families and visitors will enjoy a large camping site at the Kalia and Neve Midbar beaches, with attractions and festivities, free of charge.
Last, but not least, there will be voting booths for the Dead Sea in the New7Wonders of Nature global campaign.
